Tony & John - A Manchester Love Story at the Castlefield Rooms - Manchester Wedding Photographer

Feel, can’t you see there’s so much here to feel?
Deep inside your heart, you know I’m real
Can’t you see that this is going higher, higher, higher, higher?
Breathe, I know you find it hard but, baby, breathe
You’ll be next to me, it’s all you need
— Kylie Minogue

Some weddings feel like a really good dinner party.

The kind where everyone is genuinely delighted to be there, laughter comes easily, people cry at all the right moments, and by the end of the night nobody wants it to be over.

That was Tony and John's wedding at The Castlefield Rooms.

My day began at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, where I arrived for the final touches as they got ready together. They'd chosen matching custom sage green suits which somehow felt both incredibly stylish and completely effortless – very much them. The atmosphere was calm, excited and full of the sort of energy that tells you you're about to have a very good day. These lovebirds have been together nearly twenty years now so everything just feels effortless with them.

One of my favourite decisions they made was allowing plenty of time for portraits before the ceremony. Rather than rushing from one thing to the next, we spent the next hour slowly making our way through Manchester city centre towards The Castlefield Rooms, stopping whenever we found beautiful light, interesting architecture or simply a moment worth capturing.

As a Manchester wedding photographer, I always tell couples that the city itself makes a brilliant backdrop. Every corner has a different personality and every wedding feels completely different, even when I'm photographing familiar streets.

When I first arrived that morning, Manchester was doing its best Manchester impression. Grey skies, drizzle, and a forecast that suggested umbrellas might become an important accessory.

But weddings have a funny habit of creating their own luck.

By the time we reached Castlefield, the clouds had lifted, the sun had appeared and the whole day seemed to glow.

The Castlefield Rooms is such a wonderful venue for Manchester weddings. Surrounded by canals, historic brickwork and those iconic arches, it feels like a little pocket of calm right in the middle of the city. It's characterful without trying too hard, and it suited Tony and John perfectly.

Their ceremony was full of emotion. The kind that sneaks up on you.

Heartfelt vows, proud smiles, happy tears and so many moments where they seemed to forget everyone else was in the room.

Afterwards we headed outside for family photographs before guests gathered on the balcony with drinks in hand, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the chance to spend time together.

The speeches were everything you'd hope for. Tony and John both managed that impossible balance of being deeply heartfelt and genuinely hilarious, while their friend Ali delivered the kind of speech that has people crying one minute and laughing the next.

As the evening light softened, we escaped for a few golden hour portraits beneath the arches. It was all going beautifully until we found ourselves unexpectedly negotiating with an extremely territorial goose who clearly felt we were trespassing on his patch. Thankfully, the goose did not win.

The photographs, however, absolutely did.

Back at the venue, Tony and John took to the dance floor for their first dance to Kylie Minogue's All The Lovers, which felt entirely perfect for them. Before long the dance floor was packed and the celebrations were in full swing.

And that's how I left them: surrounded by their favourite people, dancing, laughing and having the very best time.

I loved this wedding.

I loved the way they looked at each other. I loved how thoughtful they were about creating a day that felt true to them. I loved how loved they are by the people around them.

After more than a decade photographing Manchester weddings, it's still days like this that remind me why I adore this job.

Tony and John, thank you for trusting me with your story. What a joy it was to be part of it.
