Hilltop Country House Wedding Photography

There is something about a beautiful old house, surrounded by gardens and rolling countryside, that makes the hopeless romantic in me go a little weak at the knees.

Perhaps it's my New England upbringing, where the seasons are practically a spectator sport and I grew up surrounded by green mountains, old houses and more trees than you could possibly count. Or perhaps it's simply that I've never quite grown out of my love for places that feel as though they have a thousand stories tucked away inside their walls.

Whatever the reason, Hilltop Country House in Prestbury is EXACTLY my sort of place.

Tucked away in the Cheshire countryside, with its glorious gardens, woodland, beautiful old house and sweeping views, Hilltop has all the romance and charm of a proper English country-house wedding. And then, because apparently all that loveliness wasn't quite enough, there's a fabulous space for a great big party afterwards.

I mean. COME ON.

Why I LOVE Photographing Weddings at Hilltop Country House

I'm a firm believer that the most wonderful wedding venues are the ones that give people room to be themselves. Somewhere the children can run about, the grandparents can settle in for a good natter, the drinks can flow and everyone can feel completely at home.

And Hilltop does this SO beautifully.

There are 15 acres of gardens, fields and woodland to explore, a gorgeous 17th-century house and a marquee overlooking the Cheshire countryside. The grounds are filled with lovely little corners, flowers, greenery and those soft, romantic views that make my photographer's heart sing.

But what I especially love is that all this beauty doesn't need to be the centre of attention. It simply becomes the setting for everything else.

Your people arriving. Your mum catching sight of you in your wedding clothes. That enormous exhale after the ceremony when you realise you're MARRIED. Glasses being raised, arms being thrown around shoulders and the inevitable moment when somebody's shoes come off because the dancing has become considerably more important.

These are the things I want to remember for you.

A Real Hilltop Country House Wedding: Emma & Robin

Oh, Emma & Robin!

I had the enormous pleasure of photographing their wedding at Hilltop Country House, and days like theirs are such a lovely reminder of why I adore photographing weddings in Cheshire.

There's a particular kind of joy in watching two people celebrate their marriage surrounded by the people who know them best. The familiar faces, the friendships that stretch back years, the family members who have been looking forward to this day almost as much as the couple themselves.

And Hilltop provides such a beautiful home for it all.

Emma & Robin's photographs are a wonderful little introduction to what makes this venue so special, from the romance of the surroundings to all those lovely, fleeting moments that happen when everybody gets together to celebrate.

A Little Wander Through the Gardens

Now, if there's one thing that Hilltop is particularly generous with, it's beautiful places to make photographs.

The gardens are an absolute gift. There are formal lawns, seasonal flowers, woodland and gorgeous views across the Cheshire countryside, and the whole place changes character as the light moves through the day.

I'm particularly fond of sneaking away for a little wander once the celebrations are properly underway. Nothing elaborate, nothing that requires a complicated schedule or an entourage of people carrying your dress.

Just the two of you, having a few minutes together.

We'll take a little stroll, I'll give you some gentle direction when it's needed, and we'll make some photographs that feel romantic and beautiful without you having to suddenly become professional models.

And if we're lucky enough to get that glorious, honey-coloured evening light? Well, you may find me appearing beside you with a rather hopeful expression and asking if you fancy another five minutes outside.

I promise I'll get you back to your party.

What If the Weather Doesn't Play Ball?

Ah, the great British wedding-weather lottery.

I know that when you've fallen in love with a venue for its beautiful gardens, the thought of rain can feel a little heartbreaking. But please don't let the forecast take over the excitement of your wedding.

One of the loveliest things about Hilltop is that the house and marquee give us beautiful indoor spaces too, so the whole day doesn't depend on the sun making an appearance.

We'll make the most of whatever the weather brings. Perhaps there'll be a little break in the clouds just when we need it. Perhaps we'll borrow an umbrella and venture outside anyway. Perhaps we'll stay cosy indoors and find some gorgeous window light.

Whatever happens, the important things will still happen.

You'll still get married. Your favourite people will still be there. There'll still be laughter and happy tears and someone making a speech that goes on approximately seven minutes longer than they promised.

And those are the bits that matter.

Planning Your Own Hilltop Country House Wedding?

If you're planning a wedding at Hilltop, my advice would be to enjoy everything that makes the place so lovely, but leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the people you've invited there.

It's tempting, when you're surrounded by so much beauty, to want photographs in absolutely every corner. And believe me, I understand the temptation!

But your wedding is so much more than a collection of beautiful backdrops.

We'll work out a little plan beforehand, make time for your family photographs and steal a few lovely moments for portraits. Then I want you to go back to the people who love you and get thoroughly stuck into your celebrations.

I'll be keeping an eye on the quieter moments. The way your dad looks at you when you're not watching. Your friends dissolving into laughter. The little ones making mischief. The hugs that last just a second longer than usual.

All those ordinary, extraordinary things that make a wedding day so impossibly special.

Getting Married at Hilltop Country House?

Oh, I'd LOVE to hear about it.

If you've chosen Hilltop for your wedding, I'm already rather excited about the photographs we could make together.

I'm a Manchester and Cheshire wedding photographer with a huge soft spot for romance, a healthy appreciation for a brilliant party and a rather enormous amount of affection for the people who make a wedding what it is.

My approach is warm, relaxed and centred around the things that really matter. I'll be there to help when you need me, quietly observe when you don't, and make sure that when you look back at your photographs in twenty or thirty years, you can remember not just how everything looked, but how it all FELT.

So tell me everything. Your date, your plans, the bits you're most excited about and the people you can't wait to celebrate with.

I'd be delighted to come along.
