Carla & John - A Manchester City Centre Elopement & Lake District Celebration - Manchester Wedding Photographer
always tell my couples that there isn't a "right" way to get married.
Carla and John are proof of that.
Instead of trying to squeeze everything into one day, they created a wedding that felt completely, unapologetically them. A quiet Manchester city centre elopement on Thursday, followed by a joyful celebration in the Lake District on Saturday with 100 of their favourite people. It couldn't have suited them more.
Thursday began at The Edwardian Manchester, where I met them alongside my best friend Charleigh, who had the honour of being one of their witnesses. The excitement was there, of course, but it was wonderfully calm too. No rush, no big audience. Just two people who couldn't wait to be married.
Before heading to Manchester Town Hall's beautiful Heron House ceremony room, we wandered through the city together, stopping wherever the light caught our eye. One of my favourite things about being a Manchester wedding photographer is that every corner of the city feels different. Grand architecture, hidden side streets, little pockets of quiet in the middle of the bustle – there's always somewhere beautiful just around the corner.
Carla looked incredible in a chic bridal mini dress paired with a long veil, while John wore a classic tuxedo that somehow managed to feel both timeless and completely effortless. They were both a little shy in front of the camera, but as always, that quickly melted away. We chatted, wandered and let the city do its thing around us. The best moments always happen in between.
After an emotional ceremony at Manchester Town Hall, we strolled over to Schofield's for a celebratory drink before a few final portraits. Then Charleigh and I left them to swap wedding clothes for something a little comfier and head off for pizza as newlyweds. Honestly, it sounded like the perfect end to the day.
Fast forward to Saturday and I found myself surrounded by the rolling hills of the Lake District at Abbey House, where Carla and John gathered around 100 of their closest friends and family to celebrate.
It was so lovely to see familiar faces too. I'd photographed John's sister Fran's wedding a couple of years ago, so catching up with Fran, Alan and meeting eight-week-old Sophia felt like one of those full-circle moments I love so much about this job. Watching families grow is such a privilege.
Carla had changed into a beautiful lace slip dress, while John wore his tuxedo once again, and together they slipped so naturally into the celebrations. We spent time with family, photographed some wonderfully emotional group portraits, then wandered through the gardens for a little breathing space before they disappeared back into the party.
I think that's what I loved most about these two days.
Carla and John didn't plan a wedding because they felt they should. They planned one that reflected exactly who they are. Quietly romantic, deeply thoughtful and centred entirely around the people they love.
Whether I'm photographing an intimate Manchester city centre wedding or a joyful Lake District celebration, those are always the stories I'm drawn to most. The ones that don't follow a formula. The ones that feel honest.
Carla and John, thank you for inviting me into both chapters of your wedding story. It was such a joy to photograph, and such a lovely reminder that the best weddings are the ones that feel unmistakably like you.
